The Miami-native rapper Pouya’s “They Could Never Make Me” Tour stopped in Omaha on Monday night. This was by far the craziest show I have been to. The energy was unmatched throughout the entire show. The pit was so active, and it was led by fans in banana costumes—not joking—there were 20-30 people in banana costumes bringing the heat.
The show's first opening act was an upcoming rapper named Cursed. I hadn’t heard of him before this show, but I quickly found myself loving his music. He’s one of the young artists signed to Doomshop Records, which is made apparent from the tag at the start of most songs that says “Doomshop MF”. The production of his songs and the beats used were some of the most unique I had ever heard. Cursed brought energy that the crowd matched, and he set the tone for what was to come throughout the night.
The second permanence was by Freddie Dredd. I am very familiar with his music and have loved his songs for years. He’s another artist signed to Doomshop Records who has a sound that is so unique and new feeling. He is a rapper who got huge on social media in 2019 and over the COVID pandemic. His vocals and samples in his beats are unmatched. He somehow gets a retro feel to his music even though it’s new age. Freddie had the crowd going nuts the entire time, and he just kept feeding them. Safe to say the bananas enjoyed Freddie Dredd’s set.
Then, it was time for the main event, Pouya. The main act of the night had everyone at Steelhouse Omaha extremely excited. His stage had a car on it. Pretty cool, right? Pouya is one of those rappers that you know will be good in concert and he did not disappoint. One of the most fun and interactive shows I’ve been to. He talked to the crowd a lot which called for some amazing moments throughout the show, which leads me to the McChicken Incident. A fan through a McChicken on to the stage which Pouya stopped mid-song and responded “I’ve been making music for 12 years and this is the first time that someone has thrown a fucking McChicken at me”. Such a good moment, and the whole video was posted to his Instagram page. Pouya played a lot of music from his latest album, “WHO AM I,” which was released less than a week before the show. He did an amazing job of mixing in newer music with his older releases, as well. All around, this show was such an amazing experience and if the tour is stopping in your city, I would highly suggest that you go. It will be a night you will never forget.
