In early January, singer-songwriter Hayden Anhedönia, known better as the character Ethel Cain, announced what was assumed to be her sophomore album, Perverts. The project was less vocal-driven, powered by the ominous and haunting sounds of drone noise. For some, Perverts was a difficult listen, as it was almost unintentionally designed to be indigestible for those who latched onto Preacher’s Daughter and Inbred for their hits rather than a body of full, cohesive work. With the mainstream struggling to latch onto Perverts' unfamiliar sounds, the conversation surrounding the project dwindled like a dying flame.

Rising from the ashes on March 24th, Anhedönia announced willoughby tucker, i’ll always love you, the official sophomore album from the fictional character Ethel Cain that will release this August. Shortly after the album's announcement, Anhedönia revealed the record would be a collection of B-sides from the concept album Preacher’s Daughter that followed the twisted and harrowing life of Ethel Cain.
willoughby tucker, i’ll always love you is a prequel of sorts, focusing on Ethel Cain's relationship with her ex-lover Willoughby Tucker, whose story was told on Preacher’s Daughter through the track ‘House In Nebraska’. Through this song, we can hear that Cain blames herself for Tucker's disappearance, left to simply long for what their life could have been. As Cain is known to be a slightly unreliable narrator, we do not know how truthful her depiction of the relationship is, a theme that could be explored in the upcoming album.
The record is confirmed to have previously teased or talked about tracks such as ‘Dust Bowl’, ‘Waco, Texas’, and ‘Homecoming’, all of which are known to discuss the intricate romantic life of Willougby Tucker and Ethel Cain. Back in 2022, in a now-deleted Tweet, Anhedönia described the B-sides as: “just friday night lights season 1 but like an episode when someone gets hit by a car and they have a vigil in the park”
To accompany willoughby tucker, i’ll always love you, Anhedönia is embarking on her ‘willougby tucker forever’ headlining tour. She’ll start in North America on August 12th and finish in Europe on November 9th, touring predominantly smaller venues in New York, Toronto, Warsaw, and Vienna, to name a few. She'll be accompanied by Toronto band 9Million000000 as the support act.
Tickets go on sale Friday, March 28th, but will have Presales going on throughout the week. If you choose to wait until closer to the date for Tickets, Anhedönia announced her team would be using “Face Value Ticket Exchange” for specific dates to attempt to combat the reseller epidemic.
