Over the last two months, we’ve been watching closely as Chloe Moriondo has been in the midst of her album roll out for her sea-inspired project oyster, releasing later this month. To recap, January gave us the alluring and emotional siren song ‘shoreline’, and in February everyone was feeling envy listening to ‘hate it’. Now mere weeks before the album's release, Moriondo has surprised dropped a third single, ‘abyss’.
Although ‘abyss’ typically alludes to this dark bottomless cavern, Moriondo’s song does not align with that description at all. ‘abyss’ bleeds fun out of every pore and gill, being a completely sparkly danceable track. The main guitar riff is light, airy and bright, setting the initial uplifting mood while the funky, grounding, and bubbly bass is what brings the dance elements to ‘abyss’. To tie everything together, Moriondo throws in her cheerful vocals and poppy adlibs, the perfect finishing touches to this summer pool party track.

For people who find themselves missing the Covid-Era, Vibrant, Indie Pop, ‘abyss’ may just satisfy your craving. The elements of the track fall in line with other hits from the era like BENEE’s ‘Supalonely’ (2019), or even Mxmtoon’s later project ‘Dance (End Of The World)’ (2022). Both of these tracks, alongside ‘abyss’, are complete shots of espresso, songs to wake you up, uplift your mood, or just carry you through your already sunny day.
We are counting down the days until March 28th when oyster in her entirety will come out of her shell, and enter the world. Until then, there is still time to presave the album here or pick up your physical copy at Moriondo’s online store.
For live events, Moriondo will be in New York on release week performing at The Grammy Museum and doing a signing at Rough Trade. Then nearly a month later, Moriondo will embark on her ‘Oyster’ North American headlining tour with S/ex Week supporting. Tickets are going fast with Detroit, Washington, and New York having low ticket warnings, and Toronto being completely sold out.
