A Fractal Across a Wide Range of Scales

Definition of Fractal Universe

Born in France, progressive metal outfit Fractal Universe teamed up with indie label M-Theory Audio to produce their most ambitious album yet: "The Great Filter" on April 4th, 2025. Although the band has been active since 2013 and they've performed on the cruise and are about to tour with heavy hitter Obscura , they are still relatively unknown Progressive metal is a bit of an odd one out in the metal genresphere. For whatever reason, a lot of fans of the scene aren't really aware of the genre unless they're super into guitar. This included me up until a few years ago. Progressive metal combines technical skill with that awesome metal vibe we all love. Fractal Universe is a prime example of what bands of this genre are capable of. Many reviewers of this album aren't fans because it's uncharacteristically soft for the band. Previous releases have been more influenced by tech death, while this new album is a bit more prog influenced. The top track of the album "Causality's Grip" is a great listen for anyone looking to explore the genre. It's a perfect marriage of mixed vocals, soaring riffs and would appeal to fans of harder metal. The other title track of the album "The Seed of Singularity" is a great example of the versatility of progressive bands. They can write amazon chunky djent lines as well as melodic clean melodies tinged with jazzy saxophone. It's the best of both worlds. In short, I think the album is a great listen. The band is headed out on a North American tour supporting Obscura. See the dates below.
